In today’s job market finding a job is like searching for buried treasure. Here are some non-traditional ideas you can use for your search:

1. If you’re interested in a specific employer; Friend them on Facebook, seek them out on LinkedIn and Twitter.

2. Be more than a voyeur on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Get involved in discussions, especially if the discussions are relevant to the type of work for which you are looking.

3. Connect with people on LinkedIn that work for the company for which you would like to work. Get to know them.

4. Visit the websites of companies for which you would like to work. This will help keep you abreast of what’s going on in those organizations.

5. Set up Google Alerts on companies for which you would like to work. This way whenever they’re mentioned in the news, you’ll be notified of the issue.

6. Volunteer somewhere doing the kind of work for which you’re trying to get hired. There are multiple benefits to this. One, you’re keeping your skills sharp. Two, you might pick up some new skills. Three, you’re out there in the world meeting people, people who might have job leads for you. Four, the place you’re volunteering for may decide to hire you. Five, you can put your volunteer work on your résumé. This lets employers see that you’re not sitting at home waiting for something to happen. You’re out there trying to make something positive happen for yourself.

7. If you belong to a specific profession, find associations and other websites related to that profession.

Remember, people like to help people who have helped them. When you go to these social media sites, don’t just be there as a taker. You need to give of yourself. Offer helpful suggestions. This applies to face-to-face situations as well as social media sites.

Maybe you’ve connected with a person who works at the company you really want to hire you. They have posted a request for help with a work related problem. If you know of a solution or have an idea to offer them, do so.

One final note today, don’t whine. Be positive. Negativity is a huge turn off.

A couple of weekends ago, my husband and I watched the movie, “I Don’t Know How She Does It,” starring Sarah Jessica Parker. Of course, we had a debate in front of the Red Box about whether or not it would be any good (hubby agreed it was).

Parker's overextended character is a brokerage firm professional who manages to juggle it all – amidst coming to work with pancake batter in her hair, remembering in the middle of coming home from a business trip she has promised to bake a pie for her daughter’s school bake sale the next morning, and so on. As she says, she keeps juggling, but never gets to toss anything to someone else. Sound familiar?

Finding Work, Life, Joy

We're already three weeks into the new year and some of us are getting that harried, stressed out feeling again.
Holidays are fun and with Christmas and New Year's on a Sunday, we got extra time off from work, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s holiday.
But it doesn't take long to get back on the treadmill at the office, or if you are unemployed, working at home job hunting, sending out resumes, networking and doing all you can to become employed again.
Speaking of treadmill, I did get to the gym this week for the first time in nearly two years. While I only lasted about 20 minutes, it was a start.
Fortunately, my gym is close to home and only $10 a month.
With the weekend starting, blogger Justine Grey Wise Bread has some ideas for enjoying life more and getting more time for yourself.

The Art Form of Interviewing

You say your résumé is getting you interviews but you’re not getting the job.

Perhaps you need to take an objective look at what you’re doing during the interview. Here’s a short list of some of the things you should be doing during an interview.

1. Make eye contact with the interviewer
2. Have a firm but not bone crushing handshake (no limp noodles)
3. Dress appropriately
4. Present positive non-verbal signals
5. Use proper grammar
6. Good hygiene
7. Give honest, complete answers without rambling

Think of your interview as a sales meeting. You’re the product, so make sure you highlight your best features during the interview.

Success means different things to different people – and different things to the same people as they grow and evolve through life experience.

Lately, this is something I tend to ponder often as the subject seems to come up quite a bit. It is interesting to catch a glimpse every now and then into the minds of others on this subject.

As for me? Success is most definitely not defined by the car I drive or the house I live in. It isn’t found in the handbag I carry or fancy parties I may or may not attend.

Rather, it’s being content with what I have, who I am and who I surround myself with. That doesn’t mean I don’t want or aspire to certain things. It simply means I’d rather people recognize me for the good I try to do rather than the material things, etc.

Make Your Workday a Healthy One

We all try to eat healthy ... well sometimes. Exercise regularly ... well sometimes. And in general take care of ourselves and keep stress under control.
The new year is a time when many of us are thinking about changing our bad habits.
Whether you’re employed but worried about keeping your job, or unemployed and hoping to find a job this year, here are some tips from web entrepreneur Justine Grey for a healthier workday.
Your workday may be job hunting, but it’s still good to treat it like work.
Taking a break for a few minutes is one of my favorite stress relievers. Grey says when you do take a break, consider stepping outside your home or office. And here we don’t have to contend with snow or freezing temperatures (except for a few days a year.)
A quick way to help settle anxiety and mental stress is mediatation, according to Grey. Find a quiet spot to sit in a chair or on the floor. Keep your spine straight and close your eyes. Then, focus on breathing in deeply, holding your breath for two seconds, and letting the breath out slowly. Repeat this deep breathing for five minutes. Deep breathing can help refocus and regroup the mind while squashing stresses of the day.

A Positive Beginning to a Great Year

Happy New Year 2012!

It’s a new year and a new beginning. Let’s think positive that this will be a good year.

Think positive! What does that mean? People are always telling other people to think positive. The recipients of those words, smile, shrug their shoulders or nod their heads, all the while thinking, “What do they mean ‘think positive’? I don’t understand.”

I’m going to tell you what it means to me to ‘think positive’. It means that in any given situation, think about the outcome you want. For example, if you’re going on a job interview think about what makes you qualified for the position, plan to wear an outfit that makes you look good, prepare the outfit ahead of time so you know that it’s ready. See yourself getting the job and going to work every day. DO NOT let any negative thoughts enter your mind. If you start thinking negative thoughts about the interview, crush them like a bug.

If you’re a negative kind of person this will be more difficult for you because you’re creating a new habit of positive thinking. If you put forth the required effort and allow sufficient time you can create a new habit of positive thinking.

There are those people that don’t believe in the power of positive thought. If you’re one of those people, think about this. What do you have to lose by changing to more positive thoughts? The truth is you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

My recent blog posts have included tips on networking and the like. So, what happens if you put yourself out there only to be met with unwarranted and uncouth behavior?

How bizarre, how bizarre! I recently took a trip into what I’d like to think was just the “twilight zone,” – a one-off, perhaps.

Now, I’m clearly far from perfect, but I generally try to make people feel welcome in my company. So, when I felt as if I entered my own “roast” from the moment I picked up my name tag at recent holiday function, I was knocked off of my axis a bit. Kind of felt as welcome as Larry David in a, “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” episode!

I asked myself, “Do I return the barbs in a witty way? Do I get up and just leave? I always wanted to knock over a table full of dishes!” These are things I typically don’t have to think about.

The ironic thing is I truly believe these folks had no idea how they sounded and would probably be mortified if they thought about it.

Well, I found a link to tips on how to handle such situations. Apparently, I did many things right and wished I had done many others.

Hi there. My name is Lori Stone and I am the CBE’s director of business operations and communications. We have a blog team and my assigned day is, of course, the ever-hectic Monday!

However, this Monday marks a milestone for my family. You see, 11 years ago today on a Monday morning, my father left this world.

Ron Stone was a strong man who helped lift up family, friends, employees and strangers alike. His work ethic and sense of duty and responsibility were incredible characteristics. In fact, this U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War truly personified character – another topic I recently blogged about. No pun intended, he was our rock.

As the winds of Hurricane Floyd approached, our Lion King went out like a lamb. He fought a strong battle with cancer until the very end. In that instant, I, somehow, became the new family rock. I didn’t ask for this responsibility – it just happened. In the years that followed Dad’s passing, I became extremely involved in the community and gained more and more responsibility in the workplace.

Lately, I have to admit I wonder if my efforts to try to make the community a better place are in vain. Do I plug away only to have people think, “What a sucker?” Can anything I do really make a difference? What if my energy “well” begins to run dry?

Then, I remember my father and keep going. If I don’t try, how can I expect anyone else to do it? So, I ask you on this day to join me and take a good look in the mirror.

What the…? and other reactions to texting mishaps

So, I am the newest member of “Team McMullin.” This is my first official holiday season as part of the family. Needless to say, I enjoyed sending out cards this year.

That is, until I received a text from another family member! My husband and I were both recipients of the text that read on my end, “Thank you BOTH for the nice holiday card Not.” I immediately went to the box of leftover tropical-themed cards to see if, for some reason, they were offensive (of course, they weren’t). So, what did I do wrong?

Turns out, I didn’t get the entire text. Thankfully, my husband did. The text went on to say how the card was not the run-of-the-mill holiday greeting. In other words, it was appreciated for being unique.

I have another one for you. A friend of mine recently visited her daughter in college. As she made her way to the campus, my friend texted what she thought was, “Want to get mannis and peddis?” What a nice afternoon of mother/daughter bonding, right?

Well, I can’t share with you what autocorrect did to this nice gesture -- it was that bad! Her daughter thought she had lost her mind!

The point is, nothing beats good old-fashioned, face-to-face communication. However, since we live in such a technology-driven world, we need to be mindful the message we send or receive may not be the intent. We must be careful not to be prematurely reactive or to assume the person on the other end of our message acts or responds the way we wish.

Increase Your Productivity

Feel like you’re spinning your wheels and getting nowhere fast?

Every once in a while I need to step back and reevaluate my time management methods to see if there’s something I can do to be more effective with how I use my time. Recently a friend of mine pointed out an article to me that has eight great tips in it for being more productive.

The article is written with a slant toward someone who has a job however, it wouldn’t take much adaptation to make the ideas work for a job seeker.

I think number five is particularly helpful if your job searching. It’s so easy to get on the internet and fall victim to ‘shiny ball syndrome’. Some article catches your eye and instead of moving on to your job search you stop to read it. The next thing you know you’ve read a bunch of articles that may or may not have anything to do with job searching and you’ve lost an hour or more of time that was supposed to be used for job searching.

During this holiday season, many people struggle with how they look. Maybe, they’ve put on extra holiday pounds and feel guilty. Perhaps, they are working out extra hard to look more toned in that sparkly, little holiday dress.

How to beat the winter blahs

I guess I’m lucky. Winter doesn’t seem to bother me that much. There’s nothing I like better than to make a pot of homemade soup, turn on some great movies and get snuggly with my dogs, Rusty and Chase. Sounds like paradise!

Okay, okay...so I live in Florida. That doesn’t mean we are immune here to shortened daylight hours and a cold breeze every now and then.

In speaking with several people lately, I learned it’s the shortened days of sunshine that really get to them. Seasonal Affective Disorder (or SAD) is a common issue. Symptoms may include:

· Increased appetite with weight gain –we’re not talking the holiday fare munching

· Increased sleep and daytime sleepiness

· Less energy and ability to concentrate in the afternoon

· Loss of interest in work or other activities

· Slow, sluggish, lethargic movement

· Social withdrawal

· Unhappiness and irritability

Computer Practice Information

Frustrated with your efforts to learn to use a computer? Wish you had a computer cat that would beat up the computer mouse?

I don’t have a computer cat to lend you; however, I do have two things that are even better.

Number One, the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) has agreed to allow One-Stop computer students to use the six of the computers in the ATC lobby to practice their computer skills. The ATC is located on Williamson Blvd. just north of LPGA Blvd. The street address is 1770 Technology Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL. These computers are available beginning the Monday after Thanksgiving (November 28). The days and times they are available are as follows; Monday thru Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The procedure is simple go to the ATC and during the day sign in with Jeannie Rose and in the evenings sign in with Security.

The second thing is a video. Now you may be wondering how a video is going to help you learn to use a computer. This video is a step-by-step demonstration of the Internet Mouse Exercise, which is the first exercise in the One-Stop’s Introduction to Computers 1 workshop. To access the video click here.

How to be thankful for many aspects of your life

In this season of holiday cheer and reflection, I searched for articles on how to be thankful – just little reminders.

There are many aspects of our lives to be thankful for, but I want to reflect for a moment on my place of employment. I am extremely thankful for a caring and compassionate team that strives daily to make the lives of our community members better as they get back to work and gear up business operations.

One particular aspect I am thankful for is the addition (through some natural turnover) of CBE One-Stop Employment System staff that was in the unemployed trenches themselves not so long ago. Not only are they extremely empathetic to what our job-seeking customers are going through, they bring a fresh perspective on how we can make our services better.

With limited resources outpaced by demand, this is a constant struggle – not everyone coming through our doors will end up with exactly what they hoped. We do want them to feel their interaction with us gave them additional tools in the toolbox and that someone out there genuinely cares about them.

On that note, I say, “Thank you,” to staff as well as the customers we are privileged to serve.

The New Way of Gift Giving

For those of you dreading the gift giving season because you lack the financial resources with which to buy presents; it’s time to get creative. Think about what you could do for those individuals for whom you would normally buy a present.

For example, rather than buying your significant other a new tool or something for his car, how about instead if you give him a certificate for one uninterrupted afternoon of football (or whatever his favorite sport is) or a weekend of fishing with no guilt attached? And for her, instead of wracking your brain and trying to figure out the correct size, the right style and the perfect color, give her a certificate for one weekend out of the kitchen. No cooking and no cleaning up after you’ve cooked.

These are just some ideas to get you thinking. You know the special people in your life better than anyone else. You should be able to come up with something they’ll really appreciate that will cost you nothing more than your time and effort.

Now for those of you with the financial resources to purchase gifts, I have a challenge. Buy American made products only and buy them from locally owned stores whenever possible.

I recently received an email from a friend of mine and while I will no doubt forward it on to many others I felt that this blog would be an appropriate location for the topic. I don’t know from where this email originated, however; I must say it makes sense to me. Give it a read and see if it doesn’t speak to you.

Christmas 2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition
As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high
gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

It's time to think outside the box. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the Benjamins on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave
your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at
your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese
lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that
China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about
US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow
their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our
communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.

THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

groups -- throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in
your city -- send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations, and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other,

Many Americans mistakenly believe that Veterans Day is the day America sets aside to honor American military personnel who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained from combat. That's not quite true. Memorial Day is the day set aside to honor America's war dead.
Veterans Day, on the other hand, honors ALL American veterans, both living and dead. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for dedicated and loyal service to their country. Nov. 11 of each year is the day that we ensure veterans know that we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made in the lives to keep our country free.
The brave men and women who serve and protect the U.S. come from all walks of life; they are parents, children and grandparents. They are friends, neighbors and coworkers, and an important part of their communities. Here are some facts about the current veteran population of the United States.
• 9.2 million veterans are over the age of 65.
• 1.9 million veterans are under the age of 35.
• 1.8 million veterans are women.
• 7.8 million veterans served during the Vietnam War era (1964-1975), which represents 33% of all living veterans.
• 5.2 million veterans served during the Gulf War (representing service from Aug. 2, 1990, to present).
• 2.6 million veterans served during World War II (1941-1945).
• 2.8 million veterans served during the Korean War (1950-1953).
• 6 million veterans served in peacetime.
• As of 2008, 2.9 million veterans received compensation for service-connected disabilities.
• Florida has 1.7 million veterans.
• Volusia County has 70,000 veterans – 13.7% of the population.

Adjusting to the Time Change

This past weekend we changed our clocks again. We set them back an hour.

Clocks are a manmade device for tracking time and we can change them anyway we want. The reality is that our internal clocks take a bit more to adjust. Those who travel across time zones on a regular basis experience the need to adjust more than the rest of us. The rest of us only have to contend with making the adjustment twice a year.

Regardless of how often we have to make the adjustment it’s still an adjustment and our bodies aren’t particularly happy about it. Put another way; our biology hasn’t kept pace with our technology. Below is a quote from an article on dealing with the adjustment to the time change.

“Researchers in Sweden published a report in 2008 in the New England Journal of Medicine reporting that the number of heart attacks jumps during the period immediately following time changes, and that those vulnerable to sleep deprivation should be extra careful. “

One thing is sure in this uncertain job market – job seekers need to set themselves apart from everyone else. But, how far should you go?

I once knew a woman who landed a marketing job at a five-star resort by sending a custom, multi-tasking woman made by the local chocolatier as a “thank-you” for the interview. Her tactic paid off as resort management perceived her as creative and offered her the job.

Even I tried my hand at this years ago, sending a “badge” cover letter to a girls’ organization. I did land an interview for the public relations coordinator position – didn’t get it, though.

Turn Back Clocks Saturday Night (Or 2 a.m. Sunday Morning)

Daylight savings time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday so don't forget to set your clocks back.
It's easy to lose track of time when you're unemployed and busy applying for jobs.
The days often run together and you don't even realize it's the weekend.
This weekend also is important as a reminder to check the batteries in your smoke detectors.
Most of us don't think about them until the smoke detector starts beeping in the middle of the night. Who wants to get up, go the garage, get a ladder and replace the batteries at 3 a.m.?
With an extra hour on Sunday, take a break from job searching and do something for yourself for an hour. Read a book, take a walk, call a friend or bake cookies.
Or you could use that hour to sleep, although many of us still wake up at the same time.
Me, I hope to get to the gym, since I always say I don't have time. Now I have an extra hour -- and no excuses.

STRESS Relief

We all know what helps us relax, whether it’s a walk on the beach watching the pelicans glide just above the waves, a stroll down a wooded path listening to the birds singing or sitting in your backyard watching the antics of a couple of squirrels. Knowing what helps you relax is only half the battle. You have to remember to take time for that relaxation. Stress relief should be one of your top priorities when it comes to your health.

Stress makes you susceptible to a variety of ailments and aggravates existing ailments. If you don’t believe me, Google the word stress and you will find a great deal of research has been done on the topic and how it affects your health.

Job searching is stressful, being unemployed is stressful, having financial problems…you get the idea. A new stressor is fast approaching, the holiday season. It creates its own special brand of stress.

So remember to schedule time for yourself. Time where all you do is breathe deeply and relax, clear your mind of all that’s going on in your life and just be. Stop and smell the roses, watch the birds, smell the salt air of the sea or whatever it is that helps you relieve stress.

Searching for meaning?

A good friend came across a passage in Victor Frankl’s book, "Man's Search for Meaning,” which was a daily account about life in a Nazi concentration camp.

"Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms--to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's way. The way in which a man accepts his fate and all the suffering it entails, the way in which he takes up his cross, gives him ample opportunity--even under the most difficult circumstances--to add a deeper meaning to his life. If there is a meaning to life there must be a meaning to suffering. His unique opportunity lies in the way in which he bears his burden."

These words are powerful and definitely something to use as a guide in our daily struggles.

The Often Neglected Element of Job Searching

You’re sending out résumés, filling out applications on a regular basis, posting on Facebook and keeping your profile updated on LinkedIn. You’ve even attended some networking events. In your mind you’re doing everything you can to find a job.

What else could you possibly do?

There is an element you’re, very likely, not including in your search and it has many benefits. It keeps you out in the workforce where you’ll continue to use your current skills and pick up new ones. You’re presented with opportunities to meet people who may be able to supply you with job leads.

Have you guessed it yet? It’s volunteering. No! Don’t go away. I know you need a PAYING job. I also know that volunteering can be a vital part of your search for that paying job. More than once I’ve had people tell me that they got the job they have because they used to volunteer where they’re now working.

The worst thing that happens is you spend some time helping others. Is that such a bad thing? Of course not. The best thing that happens is someone where you’re volunteering gives you a lead that gets you a job or the organization you’re volunteering at offers you a paying position. No matter how you look at it, it’s a win-win situation.

In today’s tight job market, many former private-sector, for–profit employees may want to consider dipping their toes in the non-profit “pond.” Those of us who have worked in the non-profit world for any length of time know there is a real network among the varying local community agencies.

Executive directors and staff alike talk with frequency in an industry that demands collaboration at its finest to make every precious dollar stretch as far as it can. Although many industries are working with fewer resources and non-profit organizations seem to be hit the hardest and leaned on the most, some paid positions must continue to be filled.

As a former executive director of a local agency, I can tell you I received my best job candidate referrals from my network of colleagues (to include my friends at CBE, of course)! If I found a candidate with both for-profit and non-profit experience, I was very eager to get them in front of me to interview. The combination of private business experience with the understanding of how the non-profit world operates is phenomenal.

The bottom line is this. If you are out of work, seriously consider volunteering at a local non-profit organization. It very well may lead to a job offer at the agency or another one. Yes, the salary will most likely not be what you are accustomed to, but don’t box yourself in.

Who knows? Today, you may be a volunteer coordinator and two years from now, you may be the executive director. To quote one of my favorite songs, “Take your passion and make it happen!”

Innovative thinking a desired quality

Innovation is just one of the qualities that prospective employers are seeking in new hires. In today’s world, a company needs to stay one step – or many steps -- ahead of its competition.
The late Apple CEO Steve Jobs built his fortune on innovations. There is the digital music player, the iPod, and the most successful digital media service, iTunes. He introduced the first super-smartphone, the iPhone, and the only truly successful tablet computer, the iPad. And then there’s the chain of retail stores.
But for many of us, there are roadblocks to innovation, including assumptions we may have that may hold us back.
Mitch Ditkoff, co-founder and president of Idea Champions, writes that assumptions are invisible, insidious and habitual.
They stop us before we even start -- the default position for those of us too consumed by our past to consider the future the way it really is: pure potentiality, according to Ditkoff.

Women and body image. Are you unknowingly holding yourself back in your job search?

Trying to stay hip and with it (yeah, right), I recently heard a new song by Bruno Mars, “Just The Way You Are.” It really encapsulated how I, as a woman, want to be perceived by others.

Too often, we are our own worst critics. If we view ourselves in a negative light, it will most definitely show during a job interview.

I’ve struggled with body image since my teenage years. Some of that came from external sources such as images from Hollywood and magazines. Others came from people in my life. You know-- soul-crushing comments like, “If only you’d change “XYZ,” then you would look good.” However, the most damaging messages came and, sometimes, still come from negative self talk.

Are You Thinking Outside the Box?

How often do we hear "You need to think outside the box?"
And what exactly does that mean?
When I was laid off after a fulfilling career as a newspaper editor, I was often told I need to reinvent myself and think outside the box. I was resistant to change as I loved my career.
But with the Internet stealing our newspaper readers, I didn't have a choice but to think outside the box. What to do? . . . What to do?
I hung out at the Daytona One-Stop trying to find myself -- and find a job. The dedicated staff there helped me with my resume and interviewing skills. I also was active in their Pro-Net, a professional networking group that made me realize others were in the same situation.
I was fortunate to land a temporary position there as an administrative assistant for the Center for Business Excellence, which operates the One-Stops. It was perfect, working on special projects and even writing an occasional blog.
And when that job was about to end, I was offered a position in the One-Stop Center as a career specialist. Now I am helping others who are in the same situation I was not so long ago.

Are You A Worry Wart?

What do you worry about?

Here’s a list of some of the most common things people worry about.

Money
Keeping a job
Getting a job
Health issues
The economy

If these aren’t things you worry about, mentally add whatever it is you worry about to the list.

Now look over the entire list. Think about each item for a moment. Answer this question. Will my worry have a positive effect on the outcome of (fill in the blank with whatever you worry about)?

For example, is worrying about being laid off going to prevent it from happening? Probably not. There are those times when it doesn’t matter how good a job you do or how valuable you are to the company, they’re going to lay you off. Is worrying about it going to help? No. Instead, do something about it. What can you do?

There are a couple of things. One, find out if there’s any way you can stay with the company. Can you become more valuable by doing extra things? Maybe you know how to do your job and someone else’s too. Once you have exhausted the possibility of keeping your job and have learned that it’s just not going to happen, start looking for that new job now, while you still have a job. Because, believe it or not, it’s easier to find a job when you already have a job.

The reality is that the majority of the things we worry about never come to pass. With that in mind, I have a suggestion for you. Stop worrying about things you have no control over. Instead, use that worry energy to take action. It’s really very simple. I didn’t say it was easy, I said it was simple. How simple? Every time you catch yourself worrying about something you have no control over, STOP. We all do self-talk, whether you admit it or not. So ask yourself, what can I do that could have a positive effect on this issue? Once you have the answer to that question you can move forward by beginning to take action.

Less worry equals less stress; less stress is good for your health. The better you feel, the more energy you have and the better you present yourself to potential employers.

Bottom line, stop worrying about things you have no control over and get busy doing things to improve your situation.

In this economy, most of us have either experienced an unmet need or know a friend or family member who has. Maybe, you are worried about your grandmother on a fixed income getting enough food. Perhaps, a relative falling on hard times needs shelter and your home is not a viable answer.

In any case, it’s hard to know where to begin to search for potential solutions. This can also include becoming more informed to follow up behind a loved one to ensure they did their homework or aren’t harboring false hope for assistance that simply isn’t available.

The 2-1-1 online resource is a good place to start. A partnership between One Voice for Volusia and The United Way of Volusia and Flagler Counties, this Web site is your 24-hour source of information on over 1,000 local community services in Volusia and Flagler Counties. If you can't find what you are looking for by searching this directory, just pick up your phone and dial 2-1-1 at any time for assistance. If your telephone service provider does not connect you when you dial '2-1-1', use (386)-253-0564.

Remember, just because a resource is listed online, doesn’t mean every need can be met. It’s critical to take the time as soon as possible to thoroughly research leads in order to get a better handle on the saturation at hand. Putting this task off can lead to additional stress and strain on the entire family. Good luck!

A Signature Style Can Set You Apart

Do you envy certain people who have style -- especially a signature style.
There was Jackie Kennedy, who was always stylish, even when grocery shopping.
And Johnnie Carson was a dapper dresser, as older folks would say.
Even younger celebrities make the best dressed list, like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, and Gwen Stefani, who is among the many stars creating their own line of clothes.
There's no doubt that a signature style can help in the business world. Will an employer remember you for your experience and qualifications -- or for the way you looked?
Think about your own style. Ask a friend. It may help in the job search.

Cutting Expenses

If you’re looking for ways to cut your expenses you might want to consider cutting the cost of your cell phone.

Yes, I know you most likely have a contract with your current cell phone provider however; you have nothing to lose by finding out what it would cost you to get out of that contract. Do the math, in the long run it might be cheaper to buy your way out of the contract than to stay in it.

Be honest with yourself, do you really need the internet and texting on your phone? Before you answer remember there’s a difference between what you want and what you need.

There are a great many cell phone service providers that will provide you with service without a contract. Some of the basic plans start as low as $10 a month and some of the cell companies will provide you with a free phone.

If what you really need right now is an inexpensive reliable phone, simplifying your cell phone service is an option you should consider.

Are you trying too hard?

So, you’ve been doing everything right to try to land a job. You’ve revamped your résumé, attended various job search workshops, networked all over town and assessed your skills to learn how to transfer what you’ve done in the past to a new career.

You also have set up the Virtual Recruiter tool in your Employ Florida Marketplace account as an additional extension of your thorough job search. The bases are covered.

On paper and, maybe, during a telephone interview, you receive positive vibes from potential employers. Yet, when you interview in person, it has yet to yield a job offer.

Maybe, you are putting so much pressure on yourself (completely understandable), you are sabotaging yourself. Maybe, just maybe, you are trying too hard.

A Recruiter's Pet Peeves About Resumes

Temporary versus Permanent

Believe it or not, the holiday shopping season is just around the corner. This means that retailers will soon be hiring seasonal help. They probably won’t run a help wanted ad in the paper. They’ll most likely put a sign in the window or post a job order in Employ Florida.

Those of you reading this are probably thinking, “I don’t care about seasonal jobs. I want a permanent full time position with benefits.”

That’s understandable. Let’s go over the pros and cons of temporary or seasonal work.

PROS
Getting a paycheck
Something to add to your résumé
Being out in the world where you can meet people
Valuable work experience
Keeping your skills sharp or learning new skills
Chance to gain a good reference

CONS
Minimum wage (still beats the daylights out of $0)
No benefits
It’s not a permanent position (ah yes, but it could turn into one)

From my perspective temporary or seasonal work has a great many benefits. One, it shows potential employers that you’re not just sitting at home waiting on something to fall into your lap. You’re out there doing what you can to make positive things happen in your job search.

Two, you have an opportunity to meet people and I don’t mean just the customers that come into the store at which you work. I also mean the people for whom you’re working. Although you never know who the customer is or what they do for a living. They may own a company and be looking for someone just like you.

Three, you’re keeping your skills sharp and probably acquiring some new skills at the temporary jobs you pick up.

The list could go on for more than three, but I think you get the idea.
I know from personal experience that a temporary job can become a regular position. More than once a temporary job I’ve had has become a permanent position, including the job I have now.
